An Austin woman's routine jog on Southern Walnut Creek Trail turned into a harrowing experience after she was attacked by an unknown man this past Saturday morning. In an account shared with KXAN, the woman, whose identity was protected, described the incident occurring in broad daylight, a time typically considered safe by many who frequent the trails for their workouts and strolls.
The woman has been preparing for a half marathon over the preceding six months, usually opting for morning runs. On what started as another picturesque Austin day, she was assaulted in a sudden and violent encounter. She recounted the unsettling details, saying, "We were walking in the opposite direction, and then after that, he turned around and sprinted at me [in] an attempt to tackle me," further explaining how the assailant bear-hugged her and groped her. After a struggle, she screamed, prompting him to flee the scene. She then found safety with nearby cyclists, who assisted her as she made the emergency call.
Despite the quick response from the Austin Police Department, the perpetrator remains at large, with no arrests made thus far. The investigation is still open and ongoing as reported by Yahoo News on a Tuesday update. The woman, now flagged with a sense of violation, laments, "Really all I can think sometimes is I will miss running alone." She emphasized that the assault has tainted her therapeutic pastime, but it won't prevent her from participating in the upcoming Sunday's marathon.
In light of the assault, the survivor is advocating for heightened vigilance, advising fellow runners to consider running with a company or a canine companion. Her experience serves as a poignant reminder that caution should not be reserved for night-time outings alone, as peril does not abide by our schedule. "Women are asked to take precaution when they’re running at night, and this happened at 9 a.m.," she iterated in a statement obtained by KXAN.
