The City of Avondale is basking in a bit of renovated glory, and why not? Dennis DeConcini Park, a well-worn staple of community life located in the heart of Old Town, received a shiny $2 million facelift and swung its gates open to the eager public post-revamp. Avondale bigwigs, along with the community, snipped the ribbon on Tuesday, signaling a fresh start for the 2.44-acre recreational space at 351 E. Western Avenue. With a sweet mix of federal and state dollars—thank you, American Rescue Plan Act and a decent $500,000 from Arizona State Parks & Trails via the Land, Water & Conservation Fund.
Named after the former U.S. Senator Dennis DeConcini, who served the Grand Canyon State from 1977 to 1995, the park sits snug next to the Bob Bové Branch—A Thornwood Legacy Boys & Girls Club. Serving as a cornerstone for families, the revitalized park brings much more than your usual swing-and-slide combo. Among the updated features, a pair of new picnic ramadas stand, complete with grills, and a large group ramada, for those big family outings we all say we'll plan but never do. Joining the party, an ADA-compliant playground protected by shade, a ninja exercise court for the aspiring American Ninja Warriors among us, and a resurfaced basketball court can be blown the whistle on for game time.
But it's not all run and play—practical upgrades have been implemented, such as an upscale irrigation system, fresh landscaping, better drainage, LED lighting, and security systems that could likely spot a mosquito taking an unauthorized dip. Improved sidewalk connectivity and new site furnishings invite visitors to take a leisurely stroll or park their keisters. The whipped cream on this communal sundae is the We-Go-Swing, a swing designed to welcome children using wheelchairs or mobility devices, ensuring everyone can get in on the fun.
Executive design and construction were orchestrated by J2 Design, BPR Companies, and Exerplay. Fully embracing the spirit of inclusivity, the playground boasts sensory panels and an assortment of climbers and slides topped over with engaging opportunities for children of all abilities to lose themselves in play. As reported by the City of Avondale's press release, this park is clearly not just another grassy knoll in Avondale's cap.
For locals interested in catching some of that sweet, sweet outdoor action or hosting events at the new digs, details on park hours and ramada rentals can be scooped up at the official city website or by contacting the Parks & Recreation Department.
