Scott administered the oath of office to Veronica P. McBeth, the new director of the Department of Transportation, and Jon Laria, the chair of the Planning Commission. Director McBeth steps into her new role, which is backed by a formidable résumé with more than two decades of transportation planning and policy expertise, including a stint at the U.S. Department of Transportation by presidential appointment. Mayor Scott, recognizing the critical role transportation plays in the city's vitality, hailed McBeth's appointment. "We need and will have a strong visionary leader at our Department of Transportation," Mayor Scott said, per the City of Baltimore press release. He added, "Leadership that understands that transportation is not just about roads, bridges, and buses, but about people, safety, equity, and opportunity."
Jon Laria, taking the helm as Planning Commission Chair, brings his comprehensive portfolio of real estate, land use, and transit advocacy to the post. His previous leadership on transition teams, including those for Governor Moore and Comptroller Henry, and his tenure as Chair of the Baltimore Regional Transit Commission underscored his experience and dedication to urban development and public service. According to the same press release, Mayor Scott expressed his confidence in Laria's capability to foster a more inclusive and progressive Baltimore.
