The city of Bandera, known as the Cowboy Capital of the World, has been named a Tourism Friendly Texas Certified Community by Travel Texas. Governor Greg Abbott congratulated Bandera on completing the certification process, highlighting tourism's role in job creation and economic growth across the state.
In a release from the Office of the Texas Governor website, Governor Abbott said in a statement, "Tourism is critical to both our local and state economies, supporting one in 11 jobs across Texas." Travelers to Texas contribute over $193.8 billion annually, and fostering tourism can create more job opportunities and attract more visitors to Texas.
Bandera is known for its Western heritage, offering activities like trail riding and two-stepping for an authentic experience, said Travel Texas Director Tim Fennell. He emphasized the town’s commitment to preserving its legacy, which the new certification reflects. Senator Pete Flores praised Bandera for showcasing its history and culture, helping local businesses and the tourism industry.
Local officials also emphasized the importance of the recognition. Bandera Mayor Rebecca Gibson noted the impact of tourism on the local economy, while City Council and Economic Development Board Member Deb Breen highlighted how tourism supports local restaurants and retailers. "What was then is still now, ‘Bandera friendly’ reigns. Hometown friendliness goes a long way in the Cowboy Capital of the World, bringing visitors from all around the world to experience this unique and classic anomaly called Bandera," said Carita Jundt, Bandera County Convention & Visitors Bureau Manager, in the same release.
The Tourism Friendly Texas Community program helps local governments and non-profits boost tourism through state resources. Travel Texas aims to promote the state as a top travel destination, bringing more visitors and revenue to communities like Bandera and the state overall.
