Basking in the glow of the electric future, Caltrain has received a strong vote of confidence from residents of the Bay Area, according to a recent poll that found 82% of likely voters across Santa Clara, San Mateo, and San Francisco counties holding a favorable view of the transit agency. This figure soars among the riders, with occasional users at 84% approval and frequent users at 91%.

The surge in approval ratings follows the September 2024 launch of high-performance electric trains that, aside from providing a reliably smoother ride, have increased Caltrain's service frequency and speed. Considering this upgrade, Caltrain has seen its ridership rebound to numbers not seen since before the pandemic struck, with an estimated half million passengers in December 2024 alone, marking a 41% hike from the previous December. Riding the tailwinds of this success, 73% of respondents acknowledged the need for further funding for public transportation.

Regarding the prospect of a financial boost for Caltrain through a voter-backed measure, 65% of San Francisco County and 63% of San Mateo County respondents show solidarity, as does a majority from Santa Clara County. The motivations fueling support for such measures include desires for increased service, stronger regional connectivity, and alleviating perennial traffic congestion woes.

Expressing gratitude for the public's nod, Caltrain Board Chair Steve Heminger told Caltrain, “It’s great to see this level of support for Caltrain, one of the Bay Area’s key regional transit systems. These results show strong public support for transit funding and we as a region need to work together to find a way to make that a reality." Amidst the optimism, Caltrain's Executive Director, Michelle Bouchard added, "Caltrain is proud to see that the people we serve are overwhelmingly in support of the services we provide up and down the Peninsula."

The survey by EMC Research, which paints this comprehensive picture of public opinion, was fervently conducted between January 8 and 23, encompassing 1,500 likely voters from the three counties. These findings were shared yesterday with Caltrain’s Advocacy and Major Projects Committee, fueling discussions on the future revenue strategies that have won the Bay Area's heart in support of Caltrain's endeavors.
