In a political seesaw that has left residents and council members of Bellefontaine Neighbors perplexed, Mayor Dinah Tatman has both seemingly submitted a resignation and then later proclaimed her intention to stay in office, as reported by FOX 2 Now and First Alert 4. According to a Zoom meeting attended by eight aldermen and several constituents focused solely on the issue of Tatman's resignation, the Board of Aldermen cast their votes in favor of her departure.
Tatman's flip-flop on her resignation has sparked debate amongst the city officials, adding another layer to the ongoing drama that once included an employee walkout and a temporary city shutdown, however, she has maintained that her role will continue unless she's impeached, stating: "I will still be serving as Mayor. Legally, the Board of Alderman can only remove me with an order of impeachment. An order of impeachment has to have cause. There is none," as she implied in an interview acquired by First Alert 4.
The St. Louis County municipality's government has been under intense scrutiny of late, dealing with issues ranging from employee walkouts to budgetary strains; the specifics behind the mayor's initial resignation were not disclosed. Prior to the vote on her resignation, council members like Theresa Gillespie highlighted the need to push past what he described as "the chaos going on in the city," underscoring an urgency to break free from gridlock and address the needs of the city's inhabitants.
In concurrence, Council Member Theresa Hester emphasized the necessity of attending to the voices of Bellefontaine Neighbors' citizens, noting that inaction and personal entanglements have no place in government, "If we are not listening to them (residents) we need to move out of the way, and I can not get any simpler than that," Hester told First Alert 4.
