Belmont's annual Community Night marked its 16th anniversary this past Wednesday, as hundreds gathered at the Curb Event Center for a night that honored neighborhood togetherness and college basketball. The event saw the Belmont Bruins face off against Northern Iowa State, and included a special halftime ceremony where the #21 jersey of former basketball standout Ian Clark (‘13) was retired. Highlighting traditions that foster local bonds, the event was not just about the sport but also about reinforcing community ties.
Hosted by the Office of Community Relations, the celebration brought together individuals from all walks of local life, including representatives from neighborhood organizations, educational institutions, churches, and youth and senior groups. Before the game started, guests were treated to a complimentary dinner and a range of family-friendly activities like face painting and balloon artistry. Despite the festive atmosphere, the night was as much about rekindling old friendships as it was about cultivating new ones.
In a statement obtained by Belmont's news outlet, Joyce Searcy, director of Community Relations at Belmont explained, "Community Night exemplifies Belmont's commitment to being a good neighbor and creating meaningful connections with our surrounding communities." She went on to note the mix of returning families and newcomers, which she believes underscores the event's role in uniting the community through shared experiences.
Starting in 2009 with a modest gathering of 80 attendees, Community Night has evolved significantly, now opening its doors to thousands over the years. And it's at this intersection of sport, entertainment, and community that attendees find common ground year after year. But, it's not just about the numbers; it's about the immeasurable sense of kinship and belongingness that seems to grow with each passing event.
