Boston is gearing up for a wintry mix this week, with forecasts predicting sporadic snowfall and a potentially messy Thursday commute. According to the National Weather Service, today could see "a slight chance of snow between 3pm and 5pm" with mostly cloudy skies and a high near 35 degrees. Later tonight, snow is "likely before 4am, then snow, possibly mixed with rain," which could bring about an inch of new snow accumulation, while temperatures are expected to drop to a low around 29.
From the nuisance flurries of Wednesday, heralded by a chance of light snow, a shift toward heavier weather comes into play as winter storm warnings and advisories become active at 10 p.m., driving into early Thursday. Handling the transition from snow to ice and then to rain, "this storm will not be producing a lot of precipitation," as reported by NBC Boston, which is expected to result in light snowfall and slight icing conditions.
Thursday's forecast, detailed by the National Weather Service, includes "rain, possibly mixed with snow before 10am, then a chance of rain between 10am and 3pm," with a 90% chance of precipitation and temperatures peaking near 44 degrees. The evening promises some respite as it becomes partly cloudy with lower wind activity.
Anticipating the weekend, Bostonians should prepare for more winter disruptions. NBC Boston notes that "the weekend storm – specifically Saturday afternoon and all-day Sunday – will follow in the same path as this current storm," though there may be a modest increase in snow accumulation on the front end due to the storm's two-part movement. Gusts on Friday might exceed 40 mph, resembling the bluster that followed Thursday night's clearing.
As for the extended outlook, Boston can expect to see sunny skies by Washington's Birthday, with highs nearing 28 degrees and wind gusts as strong as 31 mph. The ensuing night will be mostly clear, with lows reaching near 11 degrees, offering a frigid, yet clear, start to the week.
