ShotSpotter, a technology used to detect gunfire, played a key role in a recent police operation in Jamaica Plain. Officers from the Boston Police Department's District B-2 arrested multiple individuals on firearm-related charges yesterday morning following a ShotSpotter activation.

According to the Boston Police Department, the technology pinpointed the shots at approximately 1:15 AM near 51 Prentiss Street. Officers patrolling the area noticed four individuals on Centre Street who promptly fled, two of them seemingly gripping their waistbands, which suggested the carrying of concealed weapons. A pursuit ensued, leading into a residential building, where one of the suspects discarded what appeared to be an assault rifle-style pistol.

Two of the suspects, 20-year-old Yordany Torres Lara and 18-year-old Shawnmathew Smith, were captured after a brief chase. An additional firearm, a 9mm "ghost gun," was found abandoned in the building. A third suspect, a 17-year-old male with several outstanding warrants, was discovered hiding under a vehicle nearby.

All suspects were taken into custody and are now facing charges stemming from the incident. "Yordany Torres Lara faces multiple firearm-related charges, including possession of a machine gun and carrying a loaded firearm without a license," the BPD official statement detailed. "Shawnmathew Smith is charged with firearm possession, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, and trespassing." The unnamed minor is facing charges related to trespassing, providing a false name, and his existing warrants. The suspects are expected to be arraigned at Roxbury District Court.
