In a key third-period play, Brock Nelson of the New York Islanders scored the game-winning goal, leading the Islanders to a 2-1 win over the Vegas Golden Knights. According to AP News, Nelson’s goal at 10:43, assisted by Alexander Romanov and Tony DeAngelo, was his 16th of the season and gave the Islanders their eighth win in their last nine games.

The Golden Knights have now lost four straight games, bringing their road record to 12-11-3, a stark contrast to their 19-6-3 home record. The key save of the game came from Islanders goaltender Ilya Sorokin, who stopped Ivan Barbashev with just over three minutes left. This secured his sixth straight win. "Sorokin improved to 20-14-4. It’s the fourth straight season he has won 20 or more games," AP News reported.

Bo Horvat of the Islanders extended his scoring streak with his 19th goal of the season, a backhander that beat Golden Knights goalie Ilya Samsonov. "Horvat has five goals in his last eight games and leads the Islanders with 40 points," said AP News. For Vegas, Brandon Saad scored his first goal since joining the team on Friday last week.

In an interview with NHL, Nelson described the moments leading up to his goal: "It was unfortunate. I break the stick on the face-off and lose it," Nelson said. "I was thinking that maybe I’ve just got to go back [to the bench] and get a stick quick. Leni (DiCostanzo, the equipment manager) was ready to go. Good job by [Maxim] Tsyplakov on keeping the puck, staying on it, 4-on-5 there, to maintain possession and get it up to Tony [DeAngelo]. Tony and Romanov had a nice D-to-D pass (across the blue line), and a great shot by Romanov."

The Islanders will face the Winnipeg Jets on Friday, while the Golden Knights will play the New Jersey Devils tomorow.
