Brookfield experienced an unsettling series of events late last night when a police officer investigating a crash on Moorland Road was struck by another vehicle. Witnesses and officials recounted the incident that unfolded at around 11:30 p.m., as officers responded to an initial accident just north of I-94. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that during this investigation, a subsequent crash occurred, propelling the night into further chaos.
Following the second collision, a vehicle veered off westbound I-94 onto northbound Moorland Road and lost control, consequently hitting an officer. According to information obtained by The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the officer, with two years of service under their belt, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was immediately conveyed to a local hospital. Endangering his own safety in the chaos of the situation, the 20-year-old driver struck the officer before attempting to flee on foot.
Local authorities later apprehended the driver who, before being caught, tried to escape after the incident. Following the official response, the Wisconsin State Patrol took over the traffic crash investigation. With the officer now recuperating, WISN reported that the two passengers in the offending vehicle were released at the crime scene, having cooperated with the investigation.
Brookfield Police have moved to file felony charges against the young man for operating while suspended and causing great bodily harm, alongside duty upon striking a person. As recounted by FOX6 News, the Waukesha County District Attorney's Office has the referring the case for these charges. Compounding his legal troubles, the driver also faces additional challenges, with unrelated warrants contributing to his detainment at the Waukesha County Jail, as instructed, taken into custody alongside his own trepidation.
The mishap serves as a grim reminder of the unforeseen dangers law enforcement officers face, even during what might seem routine duties. The community's focus now shifts towards the officer's recovery and the judicial proceedings anticipated to follow.
