Brooklyn coffee shop co-owner Rachel Nieves issued an emotional plea on social media, expressing concerns that a looming rent increase could force Buddies, the popular local café, to close its doors. Nieves, in a video on TikTok that has since gone viral, laid bare the pressures facing small business owners in gentrifying neighborhoods. "This is gentrification," she said, encapsulating the struggle of independent establishments to remain afloat amidst soaring real estate prices, as per Gothamist.
Since Nieves issued her public plea for support, Remezcla reports an overwhelming response from the community, alongside big names like singer Joe Jonas and entrepreneur Bethenny Frankel joining in to offer words of encouragement. With TikTok videos evidencing queues of supporters and an outpouring of online orders, the surge in popularity has led to challenges of its own, including a backlog in fulfilling orders due to the unexpected upsurge in demand.
The Latina-owned coffee shop, which found its footing amid the pandemic's uncertainties, has been a local favorite for its coquito latte inspired by Puerto Rican traditions. As reported by Gothamist, devotees of the establishment, like Kera Lee, whose mother grew up in Williamsburg, rallied behind Buddies.
Despite the surge in business, the future of Buddies remains uncertain as the shop grapples with an untenable rent increment and competition from a new coffee shop set to open nearby. Nieves communicated her gratitude for the support, stating in a follow-up video, "I’m going to keep showing up and working hard, and maybe a wonderful thing will come out of this," as her business endeavors to navigate these challenges. Buddies is situated at 150 Grand Street in Brooklyn, as detailed by Gothamist.
