Wayne Shaw, the 61-year-old elder brother of Oakland rap icon Too Short, tragically lost his life in a violent confrontation during an attempted robbery at a marijuana grow house in East Oakland. The incident, which transpired on Wednesday morning, has led the Oakland Police Department (OPD) to continue searching for suspects after making a recent arrest. OPD officers apprehended Maijji Jackson yesterday in connection with Shaw's death, as the Alameda County District Attorney's Office reviews the case, as per the Oakland Police Department.
Shaw reportedly defended a property when the ill-fated robbery occurred, as reported by KTVU. The Oakland Police Department confirmed that suspects attempted to force entry into a property by using a vehicle, a Honda Civic, which was later recovered by police and connected to the crime. According to the owner, the recovered vehicle had been stolen from North Oakland the night before.
The impact of Shaw's death reverberated beyond the crime scene, touching the hearts of those in the East Bay's music world. "The streets really respected him," Terry Butler, affectionately known as Terry T and Mr. Community, told The Mercury News. "He really was somebody who people looked at for advice." Shaw was remembered not just as a victim but as a guardian to his brother, Too Short, and a respected figure in his own right.
Too Short, born Todd Anthony Shaw, expressed his grief on social media in a raw and poignant form, refraining from replying to messages and calls, as he conveyed through posts that saw him wiping away "real tears." His posts elicited an outpouring of support from peers in the hip-hop community and fans alike. His brother's slaying occurred just blocks away from "Too $hort Way," a street dedicated in honor of the rapper himself in 2022, as per KTVU.
