Broward County has started a beach tilling project to prepare for the arrival of sea turtles, which nest on the beaches from March 1 through October 31. The project, which will begin tomorrow, aims to loosen the sand and create optimal conditions for nesting, as reported by the City of Fort Lauderdale.

The contractor, Eastman Aggregates, will start working in Fort Lauderdale, moving from south to north. Tomorrow, the tilling will cover the area from Terramar Street to NE 23rd Street. On Wednesday, the project will extend from NE 23rd Street to Palm Avenue. Work will take place between sunrise and sunset, and operations may continue into Thursday if needed.

Residents and business owners near the beaches should note some mild disruptions. Broward County requests that personal items like beach chairs and umbrellas be removed by sunset the day before work begins and not returned until the work is complete in their area. This helps ensure the project runs smoothly and quickly.

Eastman Aggregates will primarily use the NE 18th Street access point for beach access, but other access points may be used depending on equipment needs. Updates on the project’s progress can be found on Broward County's website.

This beach tilling project is part of Broward County’s larger environmental conservation efforts to protect sea turtles, a key species in the local ecosystem.
