A Butler man, identified as Joseph Hillard, is facing serious charges after confessing to a heinous act of stealing and then brutally killing a woman's pet pug after she expressed a desire to end their relationship. The disturbing series of events began with a reported burglary on January 5, 2024, at the woman's Butler County residence, where the only missing item was her 10-year-old pug, Lexi, as initially reported by WTAE. The woman disclosed to police that she had rejected Hillard, a man she had met on a dating app, just the day before, citing his behavior made her feel uneasy.
Subsequent attempts by the authorities to trace the pug's whereabouts led them to Hillard's parents' home on January 16, 2024, as per statements made by WPXI. Although Hillard's parents acknowledged his mental health issues and even conceded that he was capable of such an act, they had no concrete reason to believe that he had taken the dog. He claimed not to know Lexi's whereabouts at Hillard's Slippery Rock residence. Without solid evidence, the investigation was momentarily put on hold.
More than a year later, in an unexpected turn of events, on January 25, Hillard showed up at the Butler City Police Station, admitting to the crime. In his written confession, Hillard described a sudden fit of rage in which he started hitting it with rage and ultimately "took it to the woods and killed it." He requested the officers to inform the victim of his actions, according to the criminal complaint cited by WPXI. The remorseful note contained apologies and condolences to the victim and her family.
After learning of Hillard's confession, law enforcement summoned him to the station last Wednesday, where he was arrested on multiple charges, including burglary, aggravated cruelty to animals, tampering with evidence, and theft of a movable item.
