Carrboro, a town known for its vibrant community and cultural activities, is about to add a new landmark to its landscape with the Drakeford Library Complex. According to a statement on the town's official website, the grand opening is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 21, 2025. This sprawling $42 million development promises to be a hub for learning, recreation, and the arts, welcoming residents of all ages to explore its extensive facilities.
The new complex will house not only the Orange County Southern Branch Library but also the Carrboro Recreation, Parks and Cultural Resources Department, the Orange County Skills Development Center, and WCOM Radio. With public performance and multipurpose spaces also included in the design, it's set to become a bustling center for community engagement. While the three-level building boasts an impressive 52,000 square feet of space, it is also functionally equipped with a parking deck, that includes 171 parking spaces, accommodating those traveling from near and far.
Perkins & Will Architects left their mark on this complex by delivering a contemporary design that resonates with the Town of Carrboro's ethos. Barnhill Contracting Company, the builders responsible for translating this vision into brick and mortar, ensured that the space was well-equipped with a variety of amenities. From workrooms, classrooms, and meeting rooms to flexible spaces, a radio studio, and a third-floor terrace, residents will find a space tailored for almost any need or event.
