Commuters will need to plan for a detour as the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has announced a forthcoming closure of the Jay Road median between the northbound and southbound CO 119/Diagonal Highway, the shutdown set to last from Feb. 28 at 9 p.m. through March 10, according to Boulder County. The closure, a necessary step for installing a bikeway underpass at Jay Road, implies Jay Road and CO 119 will switch to a right-in-right-out intersection temporarily. While motorists and cyclists will be detoured, separate routes are designed for each.
CDOT is encouraging people to sign up for weekly construction updates, which will not only the Jay Road developments but also other vital transportation news, detour plans are available on the CDOT website and travelers need to keep in mind that while these schedules are planned, they can be altered by unforeseen conditions, as stated by Boulder County.
The goal of this construction project is to promote traffic safety and operational efficiency. The planned bikeway underpass is supposed to help cushion and avoid traffic incidents at what's known as a risky intersection, according to Boulder County.
To minimize disruption, the project team has opted for a total but brief median closure instead of the alternative, which would involve an extended period of shifting barriers and managing traffic flow which could prolong the inconvenience faced by users of both Jay Road and CO 119, the project as a whole looks forward to enhancing the commuter experience with a nine-mile commuter bikeway, Bus Rapid Transit stations and safety improvements at intersections with the hopeful finish by 2027.
