Hundreds of demonstrators converged outside Lurie Children's Hospital in Chicago on Saturday, voicing their dissent over the hospital's cessation of gender-affirming surgeries for those under 19 years of age. This policy shift followed an executive order issued by President Trump on January 28, which sought to strip federal support for gender transitions and has since been temporarily blocked by a federal judge. In a statement acquired by WGN News, the hospital said it has paused these surgeries as it works "to understand the rapidly evolving environment."

The protest was a collective outcry for continued healthcare, with demonstrators stating the importance of such services. "Legislators have no business to be stepping into medical decision," demonstrator Sarah Organ told WGN News. Meanwhile, teenager Noella McMaher played a prominent role in rallying the protesters, sharing her apprehensions about the hospital's current inability to proceed with her treatment, "But I don't know if I could actually change their minds," Noella told the Sun-Times.

The demonstrators at the rally also included transgender advocates and affected family members. Channyn Lynne Parker, CEO of Brave Space Alliance, asserted her lived experience, proclaiming, "I’m the product of a transition before the age of 19 years old. I was supported. I had access to care and because of that, I’m standing here today whole, healthy, thriving," in an interview with WGN News. Echoing these sentiments, parents of trans youth expressed deep concern for their children's well-being in light of this policy change.

Fears that the hospital's decision might set a broader precedent were palpable among the crowd. "Lurie’s is a leader in this space, so if they backed down, other smaller companies and smaller organizations will follow," said demonstrator Jessica Brand-Reid, as reported by WGN News. Reports suggest other medical institutions are similarly altering their practices, with Northwestern Medicine also reportedly halting gender-affirming surgeries for minors. At the same time, a lawsuit has accused the University of Illinois Health of canceling an Illinois teen’s chest surgery in the wake of the order, a move that mirrors ceased treatments in states like California and Colorado, according to the Sun-Times.

Despite the hospital's suspension of certain services, Lurie Children's Hospital maintains that it will continue providing other forms of care and treatment plans. These circumstances unfold amid vows of support for gender-affirming care from Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul and 14 other attorneys general. The Illinois law, known for its prohibition against discrimination based on gender identity by healthcare providers, was also discussed during the protests.
