A tragic event unfolded at a Clermont apartment complex, where a standoff between a suspected gunman and the police ended in a murder-suicide situation. The Clermont Police Department released bodycam footage of the incident at the Cottonwood Apartments on Wednesday, detailing the tense moments leading up to the discovery of two deceased individuals.
According to FOX 35 Orlando, the suspect, identified as Christian Filson shot and killed his girlfriend, Sarah Dale, before barricading himself inside the apartment. When officers tried to breach a locked door, they were met with gunfire and were forced to retreat. Filson's confrontational end came via a self-inflicted gunshot wound, as per the SWAT team's discovery, with no officers injured in the conflict.
New details from the scene emerged yesterday, as reported by ClickOrlando. Police responded to a call about a woman "screaming and running from an adult man" at the apartment complex. Upon arrival, evidence of a struggle was observed by law enforcement, who eventually found Dale deceased, and where soon after, gunfire was exchanged with Filson, leading to the standoff with the SWAT team.
"We believe this to be an ambush," Police Chief Charles Broadway stated in a statement cited by ClickOrlando. The police's brief retreat and the careful evacuation of nearby residents preceded the grim discovery of Filson's body inside the apartment. Meanwhile, reflecting on the incident, Broadway expressed, "This was a truly terrible incident, and our thoughts and prayers go out to the families." An officer involved in firing back at Filson is currently on administrative leave, a standard procedure following such events.
