The Cleveland Clinic is vigorously pushing back against a recent ad campaign from Consumers' Research that brands the hospital as the wokest hospital in America. The contentious ad brings forth allegations that progressive policies overly influence the Cleveland Clinic to the point of compromising patient care. A 30-second TV spot spearheads the offensive, suggesting that the hospital promotes liberal ideologies, which include gender-affirming care for children, diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI) programs, and environmental activism.
Yet, Cleveland Clinic consistently strives to provide the best possible medical care without political influence. They argue that the Consumers' Research campaign is "riddled with inaccuracies and lies." In response to the claims, a Cleveland Clinic spokesperson told WKYC, "For over 100 years, Cleveland Clinic's mission has been to care for life, research for health and educate those who serve." They punctuated their rebuttal by emphasizing, "We do not discriminate or create preferences based on race, gender or any other characteristics, and we abide by ethical and legal standards of care with respect to our delivery of healthcare services."
Executive Director of Consumers' Research, Will Hild, maintains that the organization's critique is centered on redirecting the Cleveland Clinic's focus back to high-quality medical care, away from what he perceives as "caving to woke activists and woke politicians." In a statement obtained by News 5 Cleveland, Hild expressed, "My position here is not to shut down the Clinic. It’s to get them back to focusing on providing high-quality medical care and abandoning all of these side projects that they have."
Despite the controversy, the anti-Cleveland Clinic commercial was conspicuously absent during the planned broadcast of the Cavaliers game against the Toronto Raptors. The campaign, which also purports potentially to feature billboards and additional internet content, is just a part of a broader initiative by Consumers' Research to showcase their "Woke Alert" warnings against numerous companies. Among the other targeted organizations are titans such as Coca-Cola, Costco, and Kroger, as reported by Becker's Hospital Review.
While Consumers' Research seems unyielding in its campaign against the Cleveland Clinic and others, the Clinic continues to uphold its stance on providing ethical and nonpartisan healthcare services, free from discrimination and political bias. As the debate unfolds, the hospital remains steadfast in disputing the accusations labeled against them, aiming to keep the integrity of their healthcare mission intact.
