Clinton Hurley has been sentenced to natural life in prison for the murder of Maricopa County Sheriff's Deputy Juan "Johnny" Ruiz, Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell announced. In a violent confrontation caught on body camera footage, Hurley, after being arrested on multiple felony warrants, attacked Deputy Ruiz at the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office substation in Avondale on October 9, 2021. During the altercation, Hurley brutally assaulted Ruiz with the blunt end of a pair of medical shears and fists, leading to the deputy's demise days later in the hospital, as reported by the Maricopa County Attorney's Office.
Escaping with Deputy Ruiz's keys and patrol car, Hurley continued his crime spree, stealing the deputy's second gun from the vehicle. According to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office, he attempted to carjack a truck before successfully taking another victim's car. Captured that night in Tonopah after exchanging gunfire with a homeowner, Hurley's trail of violence concluded with his arrest.
In an emotionally charged courtroom, Deputy Ruiz's sibling recalled the pride shared when his brother joined the force and expressed the profound void left by his passing. "We cannot bring him back…so, I just hope this puts an end to our grief," Deputy Ruiz's brother said, as noted by the Maricopa County Attorney's Office. The defendant's guilty plea encompassed all 16 charges, including first-degree murder and multiple counts of armed robbery, theft, aggravated assault, and misconduct involving weapons.
At the sentencing, gratitude to the prosecution was a common thread. "I’m very proud of the work of our prosecutors James Baumann and Christopher Sammons for the ultimate goal of getting justice and bringing closure to Deputy Ruiz’s family," County Attorney Rachel Mitchell stated. Echoing her sentiments, Sheriff Jerry Sheridan, surrounded by members of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, offered his own. In capturing the extension of kinship beyond blood, "I hope they find some measure of peace in knowing that they will always be part of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office family," Sheridan told the Maricopa County Attorney's Office.
