Cochise County is on the search for a new County Recorder following the resignation of long-time office-holder David Stevens. Adhering to Arizona state law, the County Board of Supervisors will appoint someone from Stevens's political party to serve until the next general election. Stevens announced his resignation on January 17, effective at the end of February, concluding a notable 16-year tenure, as reported by Cochise County.
The Board has identified five candidates vying for the role: Melissa Avant, Billy Cloud, Scott Freeman, Josephine Mabe, and Steven Smith. In an effort to be transparent and to foster public participation, resumes for the candidates, sans personal information, will be available on the county website following the close of business on Friday, February 14, along with details for the upcoming public meeting.
A public meeting is set for February 18 at 9:30 AM, giving residents a chance to weigh in. Speaker request forms are due by 9:00 AM. The Board will then hold executive session interviews before making a final decision.
The transition process aims to ensure seamless changeover in the Recorder's Office. There is a palpable respect for Stevens's contributions to the office, with the Board expressing "sincere appreciation" for his years of service, as noted in an announcement posted on the county's website.
