The breach exposed personal information of an undisclosed number of users. PowerSchool, which serves over 50 million students worldwide, is a major provider in student information management, according to the St. Johns County School District.
The St. Johns County School District clarified that "this incident did not occur at St. Johns County School District; the unauthorized access occurred on PowerSchool’s computer systems and impacted many schools and districts in the US and abroad." The breach affected PowerSchool’s Student Information System, which manages student data like attendance and grades. The district is committed to data security and is considering its future with PowerSchool, depending on the vendor's ability to prevent further breaches. Notifications to affected staff and parents were sent on Tuesday, as reported by the St. Johns County School District.
The St. Johns County School District is reviewing its relationship with PowerSchool after a security incident, prioritizing privacy and data protection. They stated, "As we learn more about how this incident at PowerSchool occurred, we will be reviewing our relationship with them. If that relationship is to continue, we will be seeking assurances that they have taken steps to reduce the risk of something like this happening again," as stated by the St. Johns County School District.
