Tension grips Southeast Portland following a brazen daylight carjacking earlier this week. On Wednesday morning, a man reported to Portland police that several individuals had stolen his vehicle at gunpoint in a parking lot at Southeast 143rd Avenue and Southeast Stark Street, the Portland Police Bureau detailed the incident stemming from the initial distress call at approximately 10:00 a.m.
The drama unfolded when the stolen car was sighted just an hour after the carjacking incident, leading to a chase that saw Multnomah County Sheriff's Office and Gresham Police Department officers trying to intercept the suspects in the vehicle; the suspects were not willing to go down without a fight, though, and a pursuit ensued that ended with the stolen vehicle crashing into a garbage truck near Northeast 178th Avenue and Northeast Davis Street, this according to the statement obtained by the Portland Police Bureau. Three suspects attempted to flee the scene on foot after the crash, but they were soon apprehended—one of them was found armed with a gun in his possession.
Authorities have identified one of the culprits as 27-year-old Julian D. Lane from Gresham, now facing a series of charges including robbery and unlawful use of a weapon. He's been lodged at the Multnomah County Detention Center with a list of allegations that also includes Attempting to Elude a Police Officer. Two teenagers, aged 15 and 16, were implicated as well, facing robbery charges among others, and they now find themselves detained at the Donald E. Long Juvenile Detention Center.
As the situation is investigated by the PPB's Major Crimes Unit, they call on anyone who might have information to step forward and contact them, and are immensely encouraged to come forth to [email protected], referencing the case number 25-25380 as noted by police.
