The historic Fine Arts Theatre in Denton, Texas, is officially transforming. Long-standing as a symbol of the city's cultural heritage, the theater, which has seen its share of changes since its beginnings in 1877, is set to be reinstated as a cornerstone of Denton's downtown area. According to a social media post by the City of Denton, TX City Hall, the cleanup and construction started to revive the building that first opened as an opera house and later became part of the "Texas" chain of theaters in 1935.
After a fire in 1982 caused the Fine Arts Theatre to close its doors, the once-thriving entertainment venue has remained unused and in disrepair. However, the latest plans promise to restore the building and actively reintegrate it into the heart of the community.
As stated in the city's announcement, developers Alex Payne and Brad Andrus, leading the project under Fine Arts Theatre LLC, received the green light from the Denton City Council in April 2024 through an incentive agreement, signifying a major step forward for the restoration project.
