A Detroit police officer faces charges in relation to a fatal traffic collision that occurred last August. Corey Siquan Jones, 28, reportedly ran a red light on Aug. 16, 2024, and was subsequently hit by Evan Newman, 27, who was legally proceeding through a green light on his motorcycle. Newman died from the impact at the scene of the crash, as Detroit News reports.

Following an investigation conducted by the Roseville Police Department, Jones was charged by the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office on Feb. 21, facing a moving violation causing death, which is classified as a one-year misdemeanor. Initially arraigned in the 39th District Court in Roseville, Jones was released on a $5,000 bond, according to reports from CBS Detroit.

Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido emphasized the accountability of law enforcement, stating, "Police officers are sworn to uphold the law, but they are also bound by it. No one is above the law, and our justice system must apply equally to all," as reported by CBS Detroit. The probable cause conference for the case has been scheduled for March 5.

While Jones' defense attorney, Vince Toussaint, declined to pass comment, the Detroit Police Department has not immediately responded to inquiries about Jones' current status within the force. Duly noted by a $5,000 personal recognizance bond, Jones was afforded release, as per FOX 2 Detroit. If convicted of the misdemeanor charge, Jones could face up to one year in jail.
