The updated markers signal more than a mere geographical fix, they stand as monuments to a hero's legacy, a testament to the courage of a young man who sacrificed his life for others. The Douglas County Commissioners approved the renaming after the Kendrick Castillo Memorial Oversight Committee proposed it, as reported by Douglas County.
Conceived by the Commission, the gesture aims to transform a community in mourning into one that actively commemorates heroism. "Kendrick Castillo Way is more than a street sign; it is a way of life," said Commissioner Abe Laydon, as per Douglas County, emphasizing the spirit of selflessness that the naming seeks to enshrine.
Deeply personal and public remembrance intersected last December when Kendrick's family, led by John and Maria Castillo, celebrated their son's enduring impact during a formal ceremony attended by state and local dignitaries. Sharing their son's story with Gov. Jared Polis, Douglas County Sheriff Darren Weekly, and an assembly that extended beyond family, the event marked a continuation of the senior's selfless legacy, having lost his life during a school shooting on May 7, 2019.
