Chaos ensued on a Sacramento overpass when a vehicle careened off and plummeted onto Interstate 5, leaving the driver in critical condition. The shocking incident occurred Monday afternoon around 12:52 p.m. in the Natomas area, as per a statement obtained by the KCRA. California Highway Patrol responded quickly to the scene northbound I-5 near the offramp for West El Camino Avenue.
Visibility to the live horror was captured on dashcam video by a local driver, Kyman Jeung, who managed to narrowly escape the falling debris. KCRA's viewer shared the dashcam footage that showed his vehicle driving down I-5 when the car and other debris impacted the roadway. Jeung told KCRA, "It all just happened in slow motion. I saw a car falling, and tree parts falling. It was to assess the situation and figure out the least painful way to get through it. So I still had to roll through parts of the trees and whatnot, which was there's no way around that."
The aftermath left West El Camino Avenue littered with debris between Gateway Oaks Drive and Azevedo Drive, leading police to close the road shortly at 1:29 p.m. The thoroughfare was eventually cleared and reopened by 3:15 p.m. The Sacramento Police Department emphasized that the driver, who veered off the overpass, was the sole individual rushed to the hospital due to the incident.
Further reporting by FOX40 confirmed that the unidentified driver was trapped in their rolled-over car, requiring extrication by responding officers. After the rescue, the driver was transported in what police said was "critical but stable condition." As investigations continue, officers have advised the public to take alternate routes to avoid the area impacted by the crash.
