Two residents were hospitalized and a dog lost its life in a house fire in East Cobb, late Monday night. Crews responded to the blaze at a residence on Greenfinch Court around 11 p.m., where they discovered heavy fire from the back of the home, ascending into the attic through the eaves. As reported by FOX 5 Atlanta, officials believed there were people still inside and initiated an aggressive search, only to find out the homeowners had already made their way to a nearby ambulance.
The two occupants, suffering from smoke-related injuries, were promptly transferred to the hospital. The situation, by the time fire and emergency services arrived, had evolved into a dire scene, with the flames engulfing the back of the home and penetrating into the attic space. According to information provided by 11Alive, despite the challenging conditions, the firefighters managed to carry their fire attack starting from the basement, which is believed to be the origin point of the fire.
Cobb County Fire & Emergency Services fought the fire for hours, finally extinguishing the flames. In the aftermath, the homeowner speculated a space heater in the basement might have caused the tragedy. "The homeowner states that he did have a space heater activated and believes that it could be the cause of the fire," Lt. Steve Bennett remarked, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta. However, the definitive cause of the fire remains under investigation.
In a sad turn of events, two dogs were caught in the inferno; one managed to escape, sadly, the other was found dead inside the home. The incident commander received a radio update during the search, indicating that the residents had already escaped the fire. "While searching, a report across the radio informing the incident commander that the residents walked up to an ambulance," Cobb Fire conveyed to 11Alive. This miscommunication initially led to an intensified search within the inferno.
Cobb Fire Rescue encourages anyone with information regarding the fire to come forward to assist in the ongoing investigation. Details on the cause of the fire will be updated as the authorities reveal their findings.
