The baseball diamond at El Paso Community College was aglow with triumph this week, as the Tejanos swept a four-game series with Otero Junior College and celebrated key signings on National Signing Day. Among the names announced, sophomore infielder Carlos Mauldin stood out as he inked a commitment to join the University of Oregon's baseball program, a notable step up from junior college ball. His teammates, sophomore outfielders Yahir Acevedo and Joshua Prado, also made headlines as they signed with Cal State Bakersfield and Texas A&M Kingsville, respectively, while fresh talent Barry Miller, a freshman left-handed pitcher, committed to play at New Mexico Highlands.
It seems the thrill of the week reached its peak for Mauldin after receiving a personal message from Oregon's assistant coach Jack Marder, who delivered the news of the offer, as Mauldin recounted the moment from a local Tropical Smoothie café, he got a text and in excitement he bolted outside, he couldn't contain his joy and began to shout, an image of pure elation for a student-athlete on the brink of a new chapter. "I called our EPCC assistant coach Manny Sierra and he was just as excited," said Mauldin, as per EPCC, sharing credit with the coach who had supported his mental game throughout his development.
The fervor of Mauldin's signing is a testament not only to his potential but also to the strength of EPCC's baseball program, which has consistently demonstrated its ability to nurture and develop raw talent capable of progressing to higher echelons of collegiate play. This week's series of signings highlights the opportunities available to student-athletes and the promising paths that await them with the right mix of talent, effort, and guidance.
