A Mexican national has been sentenced to nearly four years in prison for his violent actions against Border Patrol agents. The El Paso federal court handed down a 46-month sentence to Carlos Ernesto Guerrero-Gutierrez after he pled guilty to three counts of assault on federal officers at an El Paso processing center.
The incident, which took place in November 2023, began when Guerrero-Gutierrez became disruptive in a detention pod and was placed in isolation. It was there that he dismantled a wooden board with nails from the pod's frame and assaulted the responding agents. As per U.S. Department of Justice, one agent was bitten on the leg, another was struck in the head, and a third suffered a puncture wound to his thumb.
In a showcasing of interagency cooperation, the FBI and U.S. Border Patrol investigated the case. Acting U.S. Attorney Margaret Leachman for the Western District of Texas highlighted the dedication of Border Patrol agents who "place their lives on the line daily in defense of the United States." "We take these violations seriously and will vigorously prosecute violent individuals who assault those who work tirelessly to protect us and our communities," Leachman commented, as obtained by the U.S. Department of Justice.
The violent confrontation was quelled after two taser deployment attempts, with Guerrero-Gutierrez eventually being cuffed and restrained. Echoing the severity of attacks on federal officers, El Paso Sector Chief Patrol Agent Walter N. Slosar said, "This conviction serves as a clear message—any individual who attempts to harm a federal officer will face swift and decisive action." Slosar also mentioned that such assaults on agents "will not be tolerated," signaling an unwavering stance on the protection of those enforcing border security.
