A tragic conclusion has come to a vehicle collision on Harbor Island Drive last December. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department reports the death of one of the involved elderly drivers. On December 30, 2024, a Volkswagen Atlas, driven by 71-year-old Gloria Alarcia, collided with a Cadillac SRX driven by an 87-year-old male, whose name is pending notification. The accident occurred north of W. Lake Mead Boulevard. The initial investigation found that the Cadillac was making a left turn when it collided with the southbound Volkswagen. Both drivers were transported to different hospitals, with the Cadillac driver later moved to Nathan Adelson Hospice, as per the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.
Yesterday, the Clark County Coroner/Medical Examiner's office notified the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department that the elderly driver of the Cadillac died from his injuries. As the death occurred outside Nevada's 30-day limit for reporting traffic-related fatalities, it will not be counted in the 2024 traffic fatality statistics. The Collision Investigation Section is continuing to investigate the incident.
Neither driver showed signs of impairment at the time of the crash. The investigation is focused on uncovering the contributing factors to the fatal event. Gloria Alarcia, the Volkswagen's driver, was transported with minor injuries to Mountain View Hospital, while the Cadillac driver was critically treated at UMC Trauma before being transferred to hospice care.
