Elgin police have confirmed the grim discovery of two deceased individuals in a residence following a welfare check early Tuesday morning, an incident they are now investigating as a murder-suicide that has underpinned issues of domestic violence within the community.
Officers were dispatched to the 200 block of E. 11th Street around 6:30 a.m. on Feb. 11, where they found Charles L. Cunningham, 82, and Sirley M. Cunningham, 73, both residents of the home deceased; the Elgin Police Department suggests this could be a case of domestic violence, although there had been no previous calls to the residence, according to CBS Austin.
The couple has since been identified by authorities, further noting the event seems to be isolated with no continuing threat to public safety, however, this does little to subdue the undercurrent of concern caused by such intimate tragedies, a sentiment underscored by the lack of earlier reports or indications of turmoil within the fated household as illustrated by FOX 7 Austin.
Elgin Police Department is urging anyone with details about the incident to come forward and contact Detective Christian Baldwin at 512-285-5757 or via email at [email protected] as the community grapples with this tragic event; the National Domestic Violence Hotline is also available at 800-799-7233 for those in need of support or assistance in the wake of or to prevent such tragedies.
