End of an Era, 20 Couples Wed on Valentine's Day at Historic Miami-Dade County Courthouse for Final TimeSource: Google Street View

For the final time, the renowned steps of the Miami-Dade County Courthouse played host to the sounds of wedding vows and shared promises as 20 couples exchanged rings and sealed their love on Valentine's Day. According to WSVN, this year marked the end of an annual tradition, as the courthouse is slated to move to a spanking new building later in the year.

Miami-Dade Clerk of Courts and Comptroller, Juan Fernandez-Barquin, who appeared elated on the occasion, asked the couples in a collective rite if they would stay wed "for as long as you both shall live," to which they responded with a unified "yes," according to WSVN. Walking up to the historic courthouse's steps, which was captured by 7News cameras, couples made the most romantic of holidays their own personal milestone.

One such couple, Sonya and Alberto Lazo, stepped into marriage after 23 years together. Sonya, expecting and with grown children, thought "it was time for us to tie the knot," she told WSVN. Alberto agreed, noting a bit humorously, "And she's pregnant, so I'm being forced to do this," calling it a "Shotgun wedding."

Honeymoon plans were also in the works for some couples. The Lazos, in particular, are jetting off to Spain as an extension of their wedding celebration. "We're leaving next Thursday for Spain, so it'll be our honeymoon," Alberto informed a WSVN interview. The sentiment of love and the convenience of an easy-to-remember anniversary date drew many to choose Valentine's Day for this pivotal life event, with the added charm of being part of a local tradition soon to be history.

With the shift to the forthcoming courthouse, subsequent Valentine's Day nuptials will be captured in a different setting. The shift, prompted by the arrival of the newer courthouse across the street, signifies both an end and a new beginning. "For one last time, couples tie knot on Valentine's Day at historic Dade County Courthouse," Local10 highlighted in their coverage of the event, underscoring the significance of the day's festivities.
