The National Weather Service in Norman, OK has issued an Extreme Cold Warning and Winter Weather Advisory for much of the state of Oklahoma and parts of northern Texas. The Extreme Cold Warning, in effect from 6 PM this evening to noon CST Thursday, warns of "dangerously cold wind chills as low as 15 to 25 below," as stated by the National Weather Service.
Residents in the affected areas, which include portions of central, east central, northern, northwest, southeast, southern, southwest, and western Oklahoma and northern Texas, are advised to dress in layers and avoid prolonged exposure to the cold. According to the National Weather Service, "the dangerously cold wind chills as low as 20 below zero could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes."
The concurrent Winter Weather Advisory signals that mixed precipitation, including snow and sleet accumulations up to two inches and ice accumulations up to one tenth of an inch, are on the menu until midnight CST tonight. "Plan on slippery road conditions," cautions the National Weather Service, underscoring the potential impact on the Tuesday morning and evening commutes.
Oklahoma City, experiencing an overcast weather with a temperature of 20°F and north winds gusting to 28 mph, is bracing for snow showers, freezing rain, and sleet. Visibility sits at 10 miles, with wind chill values dipping as low as 4°F, indicating that locals should take special care to bundle up and prepare for tough travel conditions if going outside is a necessity, as per the National Weather Service.
