American Airlines is rolling out new flights from Will Rogers International Airport aimed squarely at Oklahoma Sooners fans chasing the team across its Southeastern Conference road schedule this fall. The carrier has added flight options from Oklahoma City to Ann Arbor and Athens with connections, plus service to Gainesville, timed to OU's three away games in those college towns, along with its existing nonstop to Dallas-Fort Worth for the annual Red River Rivalry.
According to KOKH, American Airlines announced it is launching special flights from Oklahoma City for Sooners fans traveling to away games, with new routes running from Will Rogers International to Ann Arbor via Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, to Athens via Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, and to Gainesville via Gainesville Regional Airport. The Ann Arbor matchup is scheduled for Sept. 12, the Athens game for Sept. 26, and the Gainesville trip for Nov. 7, per the same report. For the Oct. 10 Dallas game against Texas, the station notes American is instead relying on its existing nonstop service to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport rather than standing up a temporary route.
Why SEC Road Trips Now Require a Connection
The new routes trace back to Oklahoma's move out of the Big 12 and into the SEC, which became official on July 1, 2024, according to University of Oklahoma Athletics. The SEC finalized OU's 12-game 2026 schedule in December 2025, confirming the Sooners' 2026 slate.
The Athens routing illustrates why these connections matter. Athens-Ben Epps Airport does not offer scheduled commercial passenger service, according to the Athens-Clarke County Government, so American's flight instead funnels fans through Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, roughly 70 miles from the Georgia campus. Gainesville presents its own quirk: Gainesville Regional Airport typically handles limited hub connections to cities like Charlotte, Atlanta, Dallas-Fort Worth and Miami. American's added direct Oklahoma City-to-Gainesville route is scheduled for a single football weekend.
Part of a Bigger Football Travel Push
The Oklahoma City additions are one piece of a much larger buildout. American Airlines announced in May 2026 that it was launching its largest-ever fall football travel schedule, adding 23,000 additional seats across more than 80 routes for college and professional football games nationwide this season. American isn't alone in chasing college football travelers. OKC's Airport Keeps Growing
The timing lines up with steady growth at Oklahoma City's home airport. Will Rogers International Airport set an all-time passenger record in 2024 with more than 4.6 million total passengers, a 4.6% increase over the prior year driven by expanded route offerings from major airlines, according to Visit Oklahoma City. The airport also transitioned from Will Rogers World Airport to Will Rogers International Airport. The airport also has seasonal Miami service from American.
For fans, the practical upshot is straightforward: a Sooners road trip that once meant a multi-leg itinerary can now, for at least three away weekends, be booked using American flight options out of Will Rogers International, including connections for some destinations. Whether that convenience holds up against the crowded parking lots and terminals regional airports like Gainesville's tend to see on major SEC game weekends remains to be seen once fans start showing up in force.
