Flint’s Hurley Medical Center is adopting Abridge, an AI tool to reduce the documentation workload for medical professionals. Abridge quickly transcribes physician-patient conversations into detailed notes, giving doctors more time with patients. Dr. Michael Roebuck, Hurley’s chief medical information officer, emphasized the technology’s efficiency: “Often by the time I’m back to my computer from the bedside, the note’s written and done,” as reported by WNEM.
In a demonstration with ABC12, Roebuck showed that while Abridge isn’t perfect, it is faster and more reliable than traditional note-taking. He demonstrated how Abridge quickly created a note from a conversation with a patient about stomach pain. Some adjustments are needed, but the generated notes are an improvement over previous methods.
According to Roebuck, the program synthesizes conversation details into accurate clinical notes, clutching onto vital data that might otherwise be lost. "It doesn’t forget and it includes that information in the note," he emphasized in conversation with WNEM. Moreover, the technology operates without long-term storage of conversations, to comply with HIPAA’s stringent privacy requirements, ensuring patients' sensitive information stays secure.
Roebuck told WNEM, "You can imagine telling somebody, you know, your inner darkest secrets about why you’re in the ER say that day, but they’re staring at the computer screen and you’re not sure if they’re listening or what they’re processing or what they’re looking at." He notes that the new AI tool helps improve documentation and aims to enhance the patient-caregiver connection.
Abridge is currently available for use in emergency rooms and clinics, but there are plans to expand its use to in-patient visits in the future, as WNEM reported. Roebuck remains optimistic about the future integrations, revealing to ABC12, "It could read the chart and find similar presentations in the past for this patient." Abridge is still being developed, with plans for further updates in the future.
