Matthew Daniel Johnson, a former school counselor from Riverside County, was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison for child sexual exploitation crimes, including possessing child sexual abuse material (CSAM), according to an announcement by the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Johnson, 34, was found guilty of particularly heinous activities, some involving filming boys as young as 3 to 5 years old using toilets and showers through hidden cameras. The announcement revealed that a pen-shaped recording device was discovered concealed within a toilet paper holder in the school bathroom directly across from Johnson's office at La Sierra Academy, as per the U.S. Attorney's Office, Central District of California.
The Fontana Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, alongside the Riverside Police Department and the FBI, was involved in the investigation that eventually led to ground Johnson's disturbing actions. Officials were able to track down child pornography being shared from his IP address, which was detected as far back as 2019. This five-year investigation has now culminated in the sentencing that looks to firmly place Johnson behind bars and under lifetime supervised release after his prison term, as reported by Patch.
Upon searching his home in March 2020, law enforcement seized numerous videos of minor boys, some showing victims under the age of 12. Johnson had admitted to authorities that he had actively placed the recording device in the bathroom, and another video file showed him adjusting a camera inside a different bathroom at a Junior High School Bible Camp, where he acted as a chaperone, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.
With a restitution hearing scheduled for May 28, the aftermath of Johnson's crimes continues to reverberate through the community, environmental the need for vigilance and comprehensive safeguards in places meant to be safe havens for the young.
