Gaido's, a historic seafood restaurant on the Galveston Seawall, has received the James Beard Foundation's America's Classics Award. The award recognizes "locally owned restaurants with timeless appeal that serve quality food and are beloved by their communities." Gaido's joins other awardees such as Joe’s Bakery & Coffee Shop in Austin, Louie Mueller Barbecue in Taylor, and Irma’s in Houston, which won the award in 2008, according to CultureMap Houston.
The James Beard Foundation's recognition reflects Gaido’s commitment to quality. Founded in 1911 by Italian immigrant San Giacinto Gaido, the restaurant has become a Gulf seafood institution. The fourth-generation owners, Nick Gaido and his wife Kateryna, continue to serve fresh Gulf seafood to both Texans and tourists. The foundation states, "Texans and tourists alike come here for the great ocean views and warm service that makes you feel at home," as reported by CultureMap Houston.
Gaido's is a seafood restaurant that raised $50,000 for Ukraine, reflecting Kateryna Gaido's heritage. This effort was featured in a Houston Food Finder article. The restaurant also received the America’s Classics Award, which honors locally owned restaurants with lasting popularity and regional food significance, as per Houston Food Finder.
Several Houston-area semifinalists are still in the running for the 2025 James Beard Chef & Restaurant Award nominations, which will be announced on April 2. The winners will be recognized at the James Beard Restaurant and Chef Awards ceremony on June 16 in Chicago, as mentioned by Houston Food Finder. The list of this year's America's Classics recipients is expected to reflect the diversity of America's food culture. James Beard Foundation CEO Clare Reichenbach stated, "It is an honor to recognize this year’s winners, who reflect the rich depth and breadth of American food culture, and who will surely continue to have a positive impact for years to come," as stated by CultureMap Houston.
