U.S. Representative Buddy Carter from Georgia's 1st congressional district has proposed a bill to rename the world's largest island. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, Carter introduced the "Red, White, and Blueland" Act of 2025, a bill that would authorize President Donald Trump to negotiate the acquisition of Greenland from Denmark and rename it. The Danish government has stated that Greenland is not for sale, but they have shown openness to a larger U.S. military presence.
The proposed renaming of Greenland to 'Red, White, and Blueland' reflects Trump’s national security interests. In a report by The Telegraph, Carter said, "America is back and will soon be bigger than ever with the addition of Red, White, and Blueland," echoing Trump's view that the acquisition would benefit the protection of the free world.
Trump's interest in Greenland is not new. He revived the idea of purchasing Greenland after his re-election in 2024, as mentioned by Vice President JD Vance during a FOX 5 Atlanta interview.
Trump had said, "I don’t know really what claim Denmark has to it. But it would be a very unfriendly act if they didn’t allow that to happen because it’s for the protection of the free world. It’s not for us, it’s for the free world," according to an NPR report cited by The Telegraph. Greenland holds significant strategic value due to its natural resources and geopolitical position.
As Carter’s bill and Trump’s plans for Greenland face uncertainty, practical measures, such as expanding the U.S. military presence in the region, may be pursued instead. Greenland currently hosts a U.S. Space Force base that tracks missile threats. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen suggested that a military expansion could be possible, focusing on mutual interests. Despite Carter's push and the support of several Republican lawmakers for the Make Greenland Great Again Act, there is no consensus on the feasibility or ethics of the proposal.
