Governor Greg Abbott has made headlines with his latest judicial appointment in the Lone Star State. In an announcement from his office, Abbott named Ben Ivey as the judge for the 120th Judicial District Court in El Paso. Ivey is slated to preside over the court until the close of 2026, provided he isn't replaced sooner by an elected successor.
The governor's choice, Ben Ivey, is no stranger to the El Paso legal community. He runs his own practice, Ben L. Ivey Attorney at Law, and boasts experience as an assistant district attorney in the area. His qualifications include ties to the State Bar of Texas and the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association. Ivey holds degrees from Texas A&M University and Texas Tech University School of Law, where he earned not only a Juris Doctor but also a Master of Business Administration.
According to the Governor's Office press release, Ivey's appointment now awaits confirmation from the Senate, the final step in the process before he can formally assume his new role.
