After 17 years of service, a downtown staple of Grand Rapids dining, Rockwell Republic, has announced its closure in a move that reflects the broader economic pressures on the restaurant industry; the news has struck a chord with the community that has patronized the fusion of American and Asian cuisines since its doors opened back in May 2008.

Emphasizing the difficulty of the decision, in a statement, WZZM13 quoted from Rockwell Republic's social media update, "Even with the current fiscally challenging environment for restaurants and bars, and so many closures recently, the decision to close this restaurant was incredibly difficult, especially when it involves a dedicated team of hardworking individuals who have supported one another like family," and while the farewells are being said Rockwell Republic has ensured their employees aren't left in the lurch, guaranteeing staff members will be offered positions at other establishments within the GR8Food Group family. This company holds a substantial collection of eateries across West Michigan.

The restaurant's end comes despite being housed in a picturesque, 140-year-old renovated building located at 45 S. Division Ave, in the Heartside District, where it has been especially noted for its high-end spirits and crafty concoctions. MLive reported that "Over the past 17 years, we have been honored with numerous awards and accolades, recognized for the best happy hour, best sushi, best Bloody Mary’s, and best brunch," a statement from Rockwell Republic reminisced over its history of praise and recognition.

A closure date has not been announced. However, Rockwell Republic's Facebook page informs gift card holders that they can seek assistance with redemption by visiting the company’s website or emailing directly.
