A police pursuit originating from a DUI checkpoint in Redondo Beach escalated into an exchange of gunfire last Friday night, ending in the streets of Hawthorne. As reported by ABC7, the chase began when a suspect fled from law enforcement agents at the checkpoint.
The confrontation turned violent around 8:30 p.m. in the 12800 block of Roselle Avenue, close to Hawthorne Memorial Park, with Hawthorne police officers joining the pursuit. Caught up in the chaos, Hawthorne officers became involved in a shooting, the specifics of which, including who fired the initial shots or if there were any casualties, are yet to be clarified by the authorities. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, aiding in the endeavor, says their Homicide Bureau is also involved in the investigation, as per ABC7.
The aftermath saw a multi-agency search operation, with law enforcement from Gardena and the Redondo Beach Police Departments coming together to comb the area around Prairie Avenue, as detailed by Daily Breeze. Despite setting up a perimeter near a mini-mart at 12845 Prairie Ave., the suspect eluded capture and remains at large.
