The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners is steering the future of the Sugarloaf district with a fresh update to its Livable Centers Initiative Master Plan. As confirmed in a recent meeting, this decision takes a step toward reshaping the area's development, with guidance from the Atlanta Regional Commission’s LCI program. The program not only offers financial assistance but also, becomes a torchbearer guiding the county's infrastructural and cultural evolution.
Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson conveyed the board's ambitions, stating that the update will "refine our vision for the district, strengthen infrastructure and create an even more welcoming environment for businesses, residents and visitors" as reported by Gwinnett County's official news platform. Ensuring that the Sugarloaf area remains a dynamic center of commerce and culture fits the county's larger scheme of progression. With the new plan, Gwinnett looks to bolster long-term strategies that have, since the plan's inception in 2018, already lured new ventures and investments into the area.
Last December's adoption of a suboverlay district by the county was a move to further promote redevelopment in Sugarloaf. The upcoming update is intended to sustain the momentum, with an emphasis on revising land use recommendations, identifying areas ripe for infrastructural overhaul, and endorsing creative place-making endeavors. Fiscally, the project is estimated to hit the $350,000 mark, with the Sugarloaf Community Improvement District joining hands with the county to share a 20% local match, bringing the county's share to $35,000.
Community engagement and stakeholder participation are set to be key components of the planning process, should the proposed update receive the green light. All these developments have been publicly shared through Gwinnett County's news release.
