Authorities from Harris and Montgomery Counties in Texas have formed a task force to address the increase in illegal street takeovers and racing. The task force made 20 arrests on its first night of operation during a weekend crackdown, which also included 300 traffic stops aimed at addressing the driving behavior associated with local car shows, as per a statement obtained by KHOU.
The multi-agency task force, led by Montgomery County Sheriff Wesley Doolittle and comprising 23 agencies, resulted in 95 citations, 223 warnings, and 20 arrests. According to a KHOU report, the first night of the operation saw officers conduct 340 traffic stops, recover two stolen vehicles and two firearms, and tow 16 vehicles.
Reports from Houston Public Media indicate that these actions are part of a preventative effort related to the upcoming Lone Star Throwdown car show in Conroe, which typically attracts large crowds and has been associated with illicit racing activities.
Emphasizing the gravity and readiness of law enforcement, Montgomery County District Attorney Brett Ligon warned against any such behavior that disrupts public safety, proclaiming, "If you're going to be a jackass in Montgomery County, then we're going to find you a stall," as he told Houston Public Media.
Past incidents have highlighted the risks of street takeovers and racing, often leading to serious crashes, which is a significant concern for the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. Major Anthony McConnel noted that vehicles of individuals caught violating the law may be confiscated as part of efforts to address the issue and discourage future offenses, as he informed Houston Public Media.
