Harris County residents, listen up: if you've got furry friends running around the house, there's some good news on the horizon for you and your pets this February. Harris County Pets, the flagship animal shelter for areas not incorporated into the City of Houston, is gearing up for a series of low-cost spay and neuter events meant to combat the ever-persisting pet overpopulation issue and celebrate Spay and Neuter Awareness Month, alongside Responsible Pet Owners Month.

In an announcement earlier today, Harris County Pets outlined a plan for at least 10 budget-friendly spay and neuter opportunities throughout February. The initiative aims to keep pets healthy while also ensuring the well-being of the entire community, recognizing that not everyone has the resources to afford full-price spay or neuter services. "At Harris County Pets, we are committed to promoting the health and safety of our communities by providing accessible spay and neuter services for pet owners," said Corey Steele, the director of Harris County Pets and the Veterinary Public Health Division at Harris County Public Health.

Mark your calendars and get ready to dial; for just $40, your pet can get the big snip from a licensed vet. But here's the catch – you must be a Harris County resident (proof required), and pre-registration is a must as walk-ins won't be accepted. Owners interested in securing a spot for their four-legged pals should call (281) 999-3191 and wait for confirmation of their appointment.

The spay and neuter events, which are set to take place at 612 Canino Road in Houston, include dates like February 4, 6, 11, 13, 18, and 20, so there's plenty of opportunity to find a slot that fits your schedule. On each designated day, as many as 250 cats and dogs from the local area can be accommodated, meaning that first come, first served is a principle you'll want to adhere to, keeping an eye on that appointment like it's the last slice of pizza at a party.
