Outdoor enthusiasts looking for a nature escape will soon have enhanced options at Harrison Lake State Park. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) is spearheading a project to renovate the park's North and South Campgrounds, a move set to improve the overall experience for campers and visitors. While this means temporary closures for these areas, the day-use portion of the park, which includes attractions like the beach and lake, remains open to the public.
According to the ODNR, the North Campground will witness 65 of its 126 electric sites upgraded to full hookup sites, a revamped dump station, and a new shower house. Over at the South Campground, seven sites are set to be transformed into pull-through sites for more straightforward RV navigation. ODNR Director Mary Mertz highlighted the drive behind the improvements, stating via the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, "This project highlights our commitment to providing safe, modern, and enjoyable outdoor experiences for visitors." ODNR expects the North Campground to reopen in October and the South Campground by June.
These upgrades come as part of ODNR’s mission to maintain and enhance the state’s natural environments, keeping them accessible and appealing to visitors. Harrison Lake State Park, which sits on what was once a vast wetland, offers a range of activities such as boating, swimming, and hiking. The park is also a habitat for various wildlife, including birds, amphibians, and small mammals, making it a hotspot for nature enthusiasts and families alike.
The planned improvements aim to preserve the park’s natural beauty while bolstering visitor amenities — a balance deemed crucial in the face of increasing visitor numbers and the wear and tear of existing infrastructure. Nearby historical sites, like Sauder Village, provide a peek into the area's past, complementing the outdoor recreational activities available at Harrison Lake. ODNR’s dedication to the conservation and enhancement of Ohio’s green spaces ensures that destinations like Harrison Lake State Park will "continue to inspire and delight for years to come," as Mertz stated in the ODNR release.
