Utah State University (USU) is all set for its 138th commencement ceremony with a distinguished alumnus at the helm. Harvard scientist M. William "Willy" Lensch, who graduated from USU in 1991 with a degree in biology, will return to his alma mater as the commencement speaker this spring. USU President Elizabeth Cantwell said, "We are privileged that Dr. Lensch has accepted the invitation to address our 2025 graduating class." According to USU Today, Lensch's journey from a first-generation college grad to associate provost for research at Harvard University epitomizes the potential alumni can fulfill.
Joining Lensch with honors is Kem C. Gardner, a leading figure in real estate and a dedicated philanthropist, who will also receive an honorary doctorate during the festivities. USU's 138th Commencement will span three days, kicking off with the academic procession and commencement ceremony at 6:30 p.m. on April 30, in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum. USU will also recognize the achievements of its graduates across statewide campuses from April 17-26, with the detailed schedule available on the University's commencement website.
In acknowledgment of his accomplishments, Lensch has not only risen through the academic ranks but has led initiatives, such as serving as a strategic adviser to the Harvard Medical School (HMS) dean and as an executive director at the Massachusetts Consortium on Pathogen Readiness. His work has included over 60 peer-reviewed articles and more than 200 lectures. Lensch's connection to USU remained steadfast, serving on the advisory board of the USU College of Science for eight years, according to USU Today.
Gardner, on the other hand, is known for his 40-year career spanning the development of more than 35 million square feet of commercial real estate across the United States. His commitment to education and community service includes contributions to various higher education institutions as well as serving on the executive committee of the United Way of Salt Lake since 1998. The commencement ceremony will be a chance to honor the legacies both men have built and the contributions they have made to USU and the wider community.
