The State of Hawaiʻi has officially launched the 'Akamai Arrival' program, a pilot project aimed to fully digitize the Plants and Animals Declaration Form used by travelers entering the archipelago. According to a statement on the Office of the Governor's official website, the initiative seeks to simplify compliance with agricultural regulations for passengers, in addition to bolstering the state's biosecurity measures against invasive species.
Set to commence on March 1, the pilot program is to actively be rolled out across selected domestic flights. Major airlines such as Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Hawaiian Airlines, Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines are in partnership to integrate the digital form into their respective arrival processes. This move is hoped to significantly streamline the form completion rates prior to travelers landing in Hawaiʻi, as reported by the Office of the Governor.
"Protecting Hawaiʻi's unique environment from invasive species is critical to our way of life, our economy, and our future," Governor Josh Green stated, as reported on the Office of the Governor's news release. In the same vein, Lieutenant Governor Sylvia Luke emphasized the role of technology in enhancing state processes and reinforcing the significance of Hawaiʻi's natural charm.
Future travelers will now to be able to access the requirement and FAQ page via the 'Akamai Arrival' website, as per the Office of the Governor's press release. Sean Williams of Airlines for America lauded the transit from paper to digital forms, citing it as a substantial movement toward evolving the travel experience. A sentiment of support was echoed in Senator Glenn Wakai's words, as he highlighted the advantages of informing passengers about prohibited items before boarding an aircraft—to prevent the last-minute scramble for a pen while over the Pacific.
Post-implementation analysis following the initial running phase of the program, which extends until May 31, 2025, will be pivotal in deciding whether to expand the digital initiative. The collaboration between lawmakers, the Hawaiʻi Department of Agriculture (HDOA), airline partners, and other stakeholders is a testament to the collective dedication towards safeguarding the ecological integrity of the islands.
