Marking what would have been the 80th birthday of an icon in music and culture, Governor Josh Green has officially designated February 14 as "One Love Day" in Hawaii. The proclamation, which coincides with an event to honor the late Bob Marley's contributions to society and the arts, was signed with the late legend's kin as witnesses to the moment. According to Spectrum Local News, Marley's sons Julian and Ky-Mani Marley were present at the Hawaii State Capitol for the signing alongside other family members.
In an island state where the local musicians have long adopted Marley's Jamaican beats and lyrical messages into a unique Jawaiian subgenre, it's no surprise that the celebration has a particular resonance. "Bob Marley was a pioneer and a visionary," said Governor Green. "He brought Jamaican music and culture to a global audience, but he did something even far bigger than that; he brought a certain kind of vision and love for people out of a time that was difficult," he continued, acknowledging the thread of peace, love, unity, and social justice in Marley’s enduring anthems such as "One Love," "The Redemption Song," and "Three Little Birds." Julian Marley expressed gratitude for the honor, remarking on the lasting affection he feels from Hawaii, according to his statement obtained by Spectrum Local News.
Furthermore, as reported by Hawaii News Now, the governor's proclamation is also seen as a tribute to the contributions of Black Americans in Hawaii. The Marley family's presence underscores the broader significance of the event beyond just a musical celebration.
Ky-Mani Marley highlighted the depth of his father’s legacy at the ceremony, emphasizing the message of unity and action. “My fathers legacy is so much more than the music. It’s calling for social justice, equality, and that natural love we should share between each other,” he told Hawaii News Now.
The proclamation was appropriately timed ahead of the weekend's Hawaii Fest, a festival at Moanalua Gardens to honor the legendary musician's birthday. Julian Marley took a moment to express his appreciation for the recognition: "We are overjoyed to celebrate our father, and the one love message, we're grateful. Very grateful. Thank you very much," he said, as reported by Hawaii News Now.
